The lower Toccoa River is a fantastic beginner river. There are NO rapids whether the dam is releasing or not.
What happens when the dam is released?
The water rises 4 feet higher and moves a bit faster. You are steering more than paddling at that point. A nice peaceful ride vs a nice peaceful paddle. Still there are no rapids and your experience level at this time is to be able to steer your craft in order to stay in the middle of the river away from the trees.
How deep is the river?
The depth of the river will vary as you go down, so you get a great range. It can be anywhere from 1 foot deep to who knows. The water is very clear so you will know when the water is over your head in depth as you are unable to see the bottom.
Do I have to get wet?
Well, being in a river there is always the possibility that you will get wet at least a bit, but at no point will you have to submerge yourself.
Can I flip over?
It is always possible that you will flip your boat. This possibility is more likely if the dam is being released or you hit a tree, or any stationary object in the river.
How often do people flip over?
Not very often. if ,you follow our instructions.
Is the water cold?
Oh yeah! The temperature of the river stays at around 45 degrees even in the heat of the summer.
Can I book over the phone?
Only if you are paying with cash. We do not take payment over the phone. We do not have a credit card machine on site.
Can we bring a picnic/food/drinks and stop along the way?
Absolutely! If the dam is not being released you are able to stop and have your picnic in the middle of the river. We have many property owners along the way and staying in the middle allows you to enjoy the river while also respecting the privacy of the home owners. However, stopping along the way is not an option when the dam is being released. Coolers are allowed on the river as long as they aren’t Styrofoam. (Note: If you plan on stopping, please be mindful and be at the take-out point at your appointed pick up time)
